Mark Tamea is an English composer, whose music draws on the infinite potential of electroacoustic experiments and field recordings. His work clashes the commonplace and the imaginary, the discernible and the esoteric, fusing this juxtaposition with delicate harmony.

Five Augmented Locations

by MARK TAMEA

A collection of five pieces which were not originally planned as an album – and so this is more of a retrospective hoard.

All are based on field recordings, sometimes using binaural or contact microphones, occasionally direct to an iPad and processed on the spot, as well as captured by more traditional means.

The extent of the augmentation varies. On some pieces the location work has been contorted beyond recognition with source material cut up and callously fed through a sampler. Other pieces have been affected in a more subtle manner and the sense of place remains to the fore.

With each production my intention was to work quickly. Overdubs were played live and given only one chance otherwise rejected and nothing was sequenced. Some enhancements were made directly to the recording on location.

Having said that though, each track on this collection has been especially remastered. They have all been floating around on Soundcloud this year, and a couple were included on recent Classwar Karaoke compliations – however you will find differences, especially the alternative take of Improvisation VII.

Mark Tamea is an English composer, whose music draws on the infinite potential of electroacoustic experiments and field recordings. His work clashes the commonplace and the imaginary, the discernible and the esoteric, fusing this juxtaposition with delicate harmony. He takes the listener on an emotional journey of self-exploration, whilst creating an intense awareness of the immediate environment, the physical world. As Landschaft puts it, Tamea’s music “moulds itself around the mood of the listener transporting that experience to a more vivid place”. His live performances transform this journey into a dialogue of improvisations inspired by the audience and the setting, creating a deep connection between the musician and the listener. Mark has been active within alternative music since the early 1980s and was among the first to employ digital sound modification techniques to create innovative ambient experiences. His musical style and ideology evolved and he was deeply influenced during a period of collaboration with Kymatik, an experimental collective that set out to question the boundaries of sound perception. His other influences include Ryoji Ikeda, The Hafler Trio and Joseph Beuys. To date, he has produced seven albums under his own name, the most recent of which, Atomism, was released in June 2013. He has also contributed to a number of compilations including Ressonus Net – Volume One, Gonzo Circus – Mind The Gap, and Doppelganger 141. His work has been released by several labels including Paradigm Records and AtmoWorks. He currently lives and works in the Netherlands.
